Giveaways

 

A couple of weeks ago my cousin contacted me with a request. She was starting her own clothing line for kids online and wanted to reward the first buyers with a gift. She asked me if I wanted to make them for her. Off course I did. I love a new crafting project. Later I found out she wasn't just starting her own line, she designed everything herself!

Maison&Objet - Paris

It all started when I boldly decided to offer Dutch designer Jurianne Matter my services when I read on her blog that she sometimes lacked time to design due to all the administrative things she had to do. I wrote her an email that I could help her with the administrative side of things. A week later I was having tea at her house. And now six months later I spend four days on the international trade fair Maison&Objet (interior design and lifestyle) in Paris working as her assistant! It were very long and tiring days (especially for our feet), but we had a lot of fun, spoke a lot of different languages (sometimes three in one conversation) and met some lovely people. Oh, and did some business as well ;) All in all a great experience. The fair was open from 9.30am till 7pm so we didn't see much of the city and I also didn't take a lot of photos. But her is an impression of our time there.



There were 8 halls for people to go to.

Monday was my last day there, the fair ended on tuesday, and I had some time off to walk around in hall 7 (although my feet were killing me I managed to spot some lovely things).

Lovely Rotterdam

 

 

 

Rotterdam is uitgeroepen tot de Europese stad van 2015. Een mooie bestemming dus om mijn verjaardag te vieren afgelopen weekeinde en het is zeker een bezoekje waard. Het meest opvallend aan de stad is de architectuur. Wij verbleven in het Nhow hotel ontworpen door Rem Koolhaas op de Wilhelminakade. Vanaf de bar op de zevende verdieping heb je een prachtig uitzicht op de Erasmusbrug. Op de fiets hebben wij de stad verkend en daarbij kwamen wij klassiekers tegen zoals de kubuswoningen en het beeld 'de verwoeste stad' van Zadkine, maar het nieuwe Centraal Station en de Markthal mag je ook niet aan je voorbij laten gaan. 

En dit jongetje kwamen wij tegen in, volgens mij, de Witte de Withstraat!

Een citytrip kan natuurlijk niet zonder leuke winkels en lekker eten. Wat eten betreft is Fenix Food Factory op Katendrecht echt een aanrader. Een grote fabriekshal met daarin allemaal ambachtelijke foodwinkeltjes (waar je terecht kunt voor het ontbijt en de lunch) en een kleine dependance van een boekwinkel. Niet onbelangrijk; er is een heerlijk terras aan de Maas. In de Markthal hebben wij genoten van een heerlijke lunchplank bij tapasrestaurant BasQ. Wat leuke winkels betreft kun je Rotterdam niet verlaten zonder een bezoekje aan het Rotterdams warenhuis Groos (trots) en ook bij Voorlopig moet je even binnenlopen.

My first commissioned quilt for a wedding in Austria. All the Dutch guests were asked to send two pieces of fabric in the colours red, white or blue for this picnic blanket for the happy couple. It was fun receiving packets every week with different fabrics inside. It became quite an eclectic mix. My quilt teacher came up with the idea of tying the three layers (top, padding and back) together with little knots. Pretty proud of the end result.

 

Mijn eerste quilt in opdracht voor een bruiloft in Oostenrijk. Alle Nederlandse gasten zijn gevraagd twee stofjes op te sturen met als thema rood, wit, blauw voor dit picknickkleed voor het bruidspaar. Leuk, elke week pakketjes in de brievenbus met verschillende stofjes. Het is een heel gemêleerd geheel geworden. In overleg met mijn quiltlerares de drie lagen (top, vulling en achterkant) aan elkaar gemaakt met knoopjes. Best trots op het eindresultaat.

Sunny Helsinki!

Helsinki was the last Scandinavian capital on our (mainly only existing in my head) citytrip to-go-to list. And it didn't disappoint. Least of all because the sun was shining gloriously during almost our whole stay. Our hotel was in the neighbourhood Katajanokka, easily recognizable by the Russian Orthodox Cathedral on top of the hill. We rented bikes (typical Dutch means of transportation off course) and cruised around the city, seeing Market square and Senate square with the impressive Dom. We walked along the Esplanade and relaxed in the parc. The great thing about the city is that its very green. You see lots of flowers and trees, which doesn't make you feel like your in a metropole. The best part of the city to go shopping is the Design District. Here you will find the smaller independent shops, like Papershop (my favourite) on Fredrinkatu. Helsinki is located on the tip of an peninsula on 315 islands so our trip wasn't complete without a boattrip along some of these islands. 

 

Helsinki was de laatste Scandinavische hoofdstad op onze (voornamelijk alleen in mijn hoofd bestaande) citytrip to-go-to lijst. En de stad stelde niet teleur. Niet op zijn minst omdat de zon heerlijk scheen gedurende bijna ons hele verblijf. Ons hotel lag in de wijk Katajanokka, gemakkelijk te herkennen aan de Russisch-orthodoxe kathedraal op de heuvel. We huurden fietsen (een typisch Nederlands vervoermiddel natuurlijk) en cruisden door de stad. Langs het Markplein en het Senaatsplein met de indrukwekkende Dom. We liepen langs de Esplanade en relaxten in het park. Het mooie van de stad is dat het overal erg groen is. Je ziet veel bloemen en bomen, waardoor je niet het gevoel hebt dat je in een metropool verblijft. Het leukste deel van de stad om te gaan winkelen is het Design District. Hier vind je de kleinere onafhankelijke winkels, zoals Papershop (mijn favoriet) op Fredrinkatu. Helsinki is gelegen op het puntje van een schiereiland op 315 eilanden dus onze reis was niet compleet zonder een boottocht langs enkele van deze eilanden.

Piggy bank

 

I love to handpick birthday presents for someone. I therefore never really like to give money, but at least in this felt piggy bank it's wrapped in a nice way.

 

Ik hou ervan om verjaardagscadeau's voor iemand uit te zoeken. Ik vind het daarom nooit echt leuk om geld te geven, maar met dit vilten spaarvarkentje is het in ieder geval leuk verpakt.

 

Tissue pouch

 

 

It's always nice to give a present that you created yourself, so I made this little tissue pouch for Mother's day (the blue one with the polka dots is for my mother). I used the free swatches I got from Spoonflower, which were almost exactly the right size, to make some spare ones. My friend Jacqueline came up with this pattern herself. Because I'm naturally lazy I didn't finish the sides with a zigzag stitch and I decided tot leave the corners flat. Depending on the fabric you use, you also don't always need to iron on Vliesofix. The gray fabric with hearts for example is Faux Suede so it wasn't necessary to make it firmer.

Het is altijd leuk om een zelfgemaakt cadeau te geven, dus maakte ik dit zakdoekenhoudertje voor Moederdag (de blauwe met de stippen is voor mijn moeder). Ik gebruikte de gratis stalen die ik kreeg van Spoonflower, die bijna exact de juiste maat waren, om er een paar extra te maken. Het patroon komt van mijn vriendin Jacqueline. Aangezien ik van nature best lui ben heb ik de zijkanten niet met een zigzag steek afgewerkt. Daarnaast besloot ik de hoeken gewoon plat te laten. Afhankelijk van de stof die je gebruikt  hoef je ook niet altijd Vliesofix te gebruiken. De grijze stof met harten bijvoorbeeld is Faux Suede, dus was het niet nodig om deze steviger te maken.
